Kia ora, welcome
I'm Rand, a qualified counsellor based on Auckland's North Shore. Whether you're carrying something heavy, facing a big change, or simply feel stuck, I offer a warm, safe and welcoming space where you will feel heard, understood and accepted without judgement.
I work with adults, children and families, and I speak English, Arabic and Armenian.
New Dawn Counselling
Every person already carries strengths that have brought them this far. Counselling helps you find them again.
About me
“I am passionate about walking alongside my clients as they move towards healing and meaningful change.”
I spent the first part of my working life designing places for people. Now I help people find room within themselves.
I'm a qualified counsellor working with children, young people and adults. I offer a warm, safe and compassionate space where people can feel heard, accepted and supported.
My journey
My life has been shaped by more than one culture. I grew up in the Middle East, speaking Arabic and Armenian at home. I moved to New Zealand in the early 2000s with my family. Like many migrants, I knew the hope of a fresh start alongside the grief of leaving people and places behind. Those experiences help me understand clients who are finding their way between cultures, or rebuilding their lives somewhere new.
Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in architectural engineering and urban design. That work taught me to listen deeply, and showed me how much our environments and relationships shape our wellbeing. My creative background still informs the way I work with people today.
I completed my Bachelor of Counselling degree at Laidlaw College, and I am a provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). I believe everyone has a unique story, strengths and capacity for growth, and I value walking alongside people as they navigate life's challenges and explore positive change.
I work with children, young people and adults, drawing primarily on Person-Centred, Narrative and Strengths-Based approaches. With children, I use developmentally appropriate, creative and play-based methods to support emotional expression and exploration of their experiences.
I work at each person's pace, prioritising trust, emotional safety, and a therapeutic relationship where they feel heard, respected, and accepted. I support people navigating anxiety, grief and loss, family and relationship difficulties, life transitions, questions of identity, and challenging or traumatic experiences.
My practice is grounded in empathy, respect, authenticity and genuine care, recognising each person's unique story, strengths and capacity for growth.
From architecture to counselling
My background in architecture taught me that space is fundamental to how people experience the world.
In counselling, space is just as important, not built with walls and windows, but through trust, empathy and understanding, allowing you to be yourself, explore your story and grow at your own pace.
What I believe
You are welcome exactly as you are, without judgement.
I'll be fully present with you, offering time and space for you to be yourself and for your story to be heard.
Understanding your experience as you live it.
For your story, your culture and your own pace.

What we can work on
My approach
At the heart of my work
Rather than focusing only on what's happened, we notice what's working: the skills, values, relationships and hopes that have carried you this far. Together we build on those, so you leave counselling more aware of your own resilience.
You lead. I offer acceptance, empathy and honesty, trusting that with support you can find your own way forward.
We explore the stories you tell about your life, separate you from the problem, and find the stories of strength that get overlooked.
Play is a child's natural language. In a safe playroom, children work through feelings at their own pace.
What happens in counselling
Call, email or send a message. Share as much or as little as you like.
We'll talk briefly by phone to see if we're a good fit and find a time that suits.
We get to know each other, and I explain how confidentiality works so you know your privacy is protected. Then we talk about what's brought you here and what you'd like to be different.
We meet regularly at a pace that suits you, and check in along the way.
Privacy & confidentiality
Everything you share in counselling is treated as confidential, in line with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) Code of Ethics and the Health Information Privacy Code 2020. Your information is only shared with your consent, except in the rare situations explained here.
At our first session I'll explain, in clear and simple language, how counselling works, what it costs, and the extent and limits of confidentiality. You're welcome to ask questions, and you can change your mind or stop counselling at any time.
Confidentiality has a few limits: if there is serious danger to you or someone else, if you're not able to make safe decisions for yourself, or if the law requires it. Wherever it's safe to do so, I'll talk with you first, and only the minimum information needed will be shared.
Notes are stored securely and kept private. You have the right to see your records and to know how they're kept and who can access them.
Children receive information in a way that suits their age, and their views and consent matter too. I work in partnership with parents and caregivers and share general progress with them, while keeping the details of what a child says private so they feel safe to open up. If a child's safety is at risk, I will always act to protect them.
Questions
No. You can contact me directly. Referrals from GPs, schools and other professionals are also welcome.
It's different for everyone. Some people come for a few sessions, others for longer. We'll keep checking in about what's helpful, and you can stop at any time.
Yes. Many people find it just as helpful as meeting in person, and it can be easier to fit around work and family. You'll need a private space and a reliable internet connection.
I usually meet parents or caregivers first to understand what's happening, then see your child for play-based sessions and keep you updated along the way.
Yes. Sessions are available in English, Arabic and Armenian, whichever you're most comfortable in.
